COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This intro-course offers practice in basic yoga. Students study history and basic terminology along with philosophical and physiological principles and the movements of yoga.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
This course is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills for developing a personal yoga practice at home, for a lifetime of total-well-being.

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
GRADING:
• 30% of your grade… ATTENDANCE
• 20% of your grade…SKILL TEST-FORM
• 10% of your grade HOMEWORK
• 10% of your grade QUIZZES
• 30% of your grade PROJECT
• Your final grade will be calculated on the basis of the following scale: 90+ = A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, 59- = F.
Policy for LATE WORK and MAKE-UP WORK: If a student is unable to turn in assignments on time it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and schedule when the late work will be turned in. If the late work is not turned in at the designated time the student will receive a zero for that assignment.
Students may earn up to 5 bonus points by reading a book(s) or articles related toYOGA; and/or practice with a classmate outside of class on a regular basis and/or attend another YOGA style outside the classroom. Students must submit a brief summary of each book, article or studio you visited or keep a practice log to earn the bonus points. This will be added to your final attendance grade.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
1. Attendance (30%). Students are required to sign-in at each class Failure to do so will constitute an absence.
0-1 absences – 100%
2-3 absence - 90%
4-5 absences - 80%
5-6 absences - 70%
7 absences 60%
Etc.
2. Class Participation (35%). This includes but is not limited to verbal assignments such as sanskrit terminology, kinesthetic form, and understanding of Sun Salutation, yin yoga, Ayurvedic yoga, meditation, vinyasa yoga.
3. Departmental Exams:
Quiz on Syllabi 05%. Second week.
Mid-Term Project 15%. Week of November 16, 2009.
Final Paper 15%. Last class.
WELLNESS TEST Online through Vista. Instructions to access the Wellness Test and tutorials are attached to the syllabus.
*Student-Wellness Test, required by the state. For students completing this test last semester, receiving 80% or better, the test is no longer required. All other students are required to take the online test. Print and submit your grade no later than April 25, 2009. Failure to do so will result an incomplete grade. You must show proof of your grade.
*Note: All C.E. students are required to conform to the above syllabus, excluding section VII.
CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICIES:
1. Please be on time. No one is permitted to leave early. Except in an emergency, students arriving late or leaving early will be considered absent.
2. Each student is required to sign in at the beginning of class. If you fail to sign in, you will be marked absent.
3. A yoga mat is required. You must bring your mat to class or you will be marked absent. All other props are supplied in class.
4. Yoga is practiced in bare feet. Remove shoes and socks, and then sit quietly on your yoga mat until class begins.
5. Please wear comfortable, moveable clothing. Shorts and a t-shirt are preferred. DO NOT WEAR JEANS. Students arriving to class in jeans will be marked absent.
6. Never come to class on an empty or a full stomach. A light meal 2-3 hours prior to class is okay. I recommend eating fruit, or an 8oz. yogurt, prior to class. Arrive hydrated. Yoga makes you thirsty. Please bring a 24 oz. bottle of water to class and drink it.
7. Please inform the instructor if you have any injuries, disabilities, high or low-blood pressure, are pregnant, menstruating, ill (headache), or taking medication.
8. Please supply the instructor with a list of all medications you are taking.
9. No cell phones permitted. Leave your cell phone in the car. If your cell phone rings or vibrates, you will be marked absent.
Always be prepared for class with pen and paper to take notes. Keep a journal.
LOCATION OF CLASS MEETINGS:
M/W class will be held in FTC – Gymnasium.
Saturday class will be held in the FTC – Dance Studio.
To meet the objectives of this course, it is important that the student participate actively and on a regular basis. The student is responsible for dropping the course if excessive absences occur. Check with the Registrar’s Office for the official drop procedure. The student may make up a maximum of three absences through bonus point work. Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the start of class may be considered absent.
DROP POLICY:
PLEASE NOTE: No student will be dropped by the instructor for non-attendance.
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw before the withdraw date. If you have an unexpected conflict with your work schedule, family responsibilities, etc. there may be alternatives. Please contact me before the withdraw date for dropping the class under the circumstances. My signature or the Dean’s signature is required on drop slips.

WEEK 1 History, yamas, niyamas, Pranayama, Primary Asanas from the book “Light on Yoga” by B.K. S. Iyengar. The foundation will be built based on Iyengar principles.

WEEK 2 Quiz on syllabi, review asanas, pranayama. Yamas, niyamas, read p-468 Surya-namaskar/Sun salutation
WEEK 3 & 4 Anatomy, alignment, core stability
Asanas p-14, 15, 8, 9, 6, 7, 26, 33, 34, 223, 244. 292 see Appendix p-462 Read the instructions and the benefits of each pose.
WEEK 5 & 6 Add p-274-279, 244 246, 250 and meditation. Hold the poses.
WEEK 7 & 8 Midterm project: Meditation, yoga nidra, and sound plus the asanas
WEEK 9-10 Chinese Anatomy, Meridians, Ayurveda yoga and chi energy movement.
WEEK 11-14 Yin yoga, vinyasa, meditation, and review of how to create a vinyasa (therapy) yoga session. FINAL PROJECT DUE
NOTE: The above are asanas that must be covered to build a foundation. If time permits, we will cover advanced backbends, inversions and headstands.
