GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This introductory and intermediate course allows students to practice the physical and mental aspects of Tai Chi. Students study history and basic terms along with philosophical, physiological principles, etiquette, meditation and the movements of Tai Chi. The course will provide a strong base for lifetime skills in well-being.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

Tai Chi is designed to provide the student an introduction to the internal martial arts that the student will apply to functional, everyday life-time skills for total well-being.

CLASSROMM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

  1. Attend class regularly, be punctual, dress appropriately( NO JEANS) and participate actively.
  2. Each student is required to sign in at the beginning of class. If you fail to sign in, you may be marked absent.
  3. Engage in warm-up and flexibility activities to prepare for participation in class activities.
  4. Engage in strength and conditioning activities to prepare for participation in class activities.
  5. Practice the Yang Style, Part I and the saber independently.
  6. Intermediate students progress into Parts II, III, Simplified, and Part II of the saber and sword, as appropriate.
  7. Correctly perform such skills as stances, kicks, punches and arm movements
  8. Develop cardio respiratory fitness and physical conditioning.
  9. Apply knowledge of rules and principles of Tai Chi to practice.
  10. Develop greater flexibility, endurance, balance and coordination.
  11. Apply the principle of alignment with the principle of Tai Chi.
  12. Analyze movement; understand basic bio-mechanics concepts and correct error in personal movement patterns.
  13. Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of Tai Chi terminology.
  14. Enjoy the satisfaction of group cooperation in the art and flow of physical activity.
  15. Learn the basic benefits of Tai Chi such as managing cardio, arthritis, weight loss,etc.

GRADING:

    • 30% of your grade… ATTENDANCE
    • 20% of your grade…SKILL TEST-FORM
    • 10% of your grade HOMEWORK
    • 10% of your grade QUIZZES
    • 30% of your grade PROJECT
    • Your final grade will be calculated on the basis of the following scale: 90+ = A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, 59- = F.

Policy for LATE WORK and MAKE-UP WORK: If a student is unable to turn in assignments on time it is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and schedule when the late work will be turned in. If the late work is not turned in at the designated time the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

Students may earn up to 5 bonus points by reading a book(s) or articles related to Tai Chi; and/or practice with a classmate outside of class on a regular basis and/or attend a Tai Chi tournament outside the classroom. Students must submit a brief summary of each book, article or studio you visited or keep a practice log to earn the bonus points. This will be added to your final attendance grade.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

  1. Attendance (30). Students are required to sign-in at each class Failure to do so will constitute an absence.

    0-1 absences – 100%

    2-3 absence - 90%

    4-5 absences - 80%

    5-6 absences - 70%

    Etc.

  2. To meet the objectives of this course, it is important that the student participate actively and on a regular basis. The student is responsible for dropping the course if excessive absences occur. Check with the Registrar’s Office for the official drop procedure. The student may make up a maximum of three absences through bonus point work. Students arriving more than 10 minutes after the start of class may be considered absent.
  3. There will be zero tolerance on cell phones in the class room. The use of the cell phone in the classroom will constitute an automatic absence.

DROP POLICY:

PLEASE NOTE: No student will be dropped by the instructor for non-attendance.

It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw before the withdraw date. If you have an unexpected conflict with your work schedule, family responsibilities, etc. there may be alternatives. Please contact me before the withdraw date for dropping the class under the circumstances. My signature or the Dean’s signature is required on drop slips.

 

 

 

DEPARTMENT EXAMS/REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE THE COURSE:

ORAL QUIZZES will include, but is not limited to, a quiz on the sylibi, vocabulary, principles, Tai chi warm-up and names of the poses.

There will be weekly critiques on terms and form.

  • HOMEWORK: A weekly log is to be kept and turned in for review at the discretion of the instructor.

  • MIDTERM PROJECT: To be kept with your log and will contain ongoing pictures and/or film of your progress. PROJECT DUE TO BE VIDEO TAPED THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 2ND. You must ATTEND. There will be Zero tolerance.

  • FINAL PROJECT: Project is to be creative, analytical, scientific of any topic related to Tai Chi.. Due December. 2 -7, 2009.

  • WELLNESS TEST Online through Vista. Instructions to access the Wellness Test and tutorials are attached to the syllabus.

  • *Student-Wellness Test, required by the state. For students completing this test last semester, receiving 80% or better, the test is no longer required. All other students are required to take the online test through Vista. Print and submit your grade no later than two weeks before final. Failure to do so will result an incomplete grade. You must show proof of your grade.

    TAI CHI 1 & 2 ASSIGNMENTS, FALL 2009

    Week 1-2 Orientation, syllabus, History, warm up exercises.

    Week 3 -6 Principles, philosophy, theory on anatomy, complete Part I.

    Week 7-8 Martial art application, Chinese terminology, and midterm project

    Due.

    Week 9-10 Weapon(s) refinement of Part I, and theory.

    WWeek 11-16 Final project due and refinement of form.

    DATES TO REMEMBER:

    September 7, Labor day holiday,

    October 1, Last day to drop.

    November 6, Last day to drop and receive a "W"./p>

    November 26-29, Thanksgiving holidays.
